A new ‘Friday the 13th’ reboot may be on the way with NBA superstar LeBron James as one of the executive producers on the project…
It looks like Jason Voorhees will rise from the grave and he may have Michael Myers to thank for it.
On the heels of a massive opening of more than $70 million during the first weekend release of the new ‘Halloween’ sequel, a ‘Friday the 13th’ reboot is in the works with NBA superstar LeBron James as one of the primary producers.
According to several reports, James and his SpringHill production company are in talks with Vertigo Entertainment to produce a reboot of the popular ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise.
The news of the reboot comes after original ‘Friday the 13th’ writer Victor Miller won a court case that returned the rights to the characters and locations from the horror films to his control. Miller is now shopping the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise to a new home in hopes of capitalizing on the recent explosion from horror films such as ‘Halloween’ and the recently rebooted ‘It’ film based on the Stephen King novel of the same name.
James is reportedly getting involved because he’s a huge horror movie fan including a passion for the original films from the ‘Friday the 13th’ series that started back in 1980 with a story about a group of camp counselors who are hunted and killed by a vengeful mother enraged after her son Jason accidentally drowned while attending Camp Crystal Lake.
The last ‘Friday the 13th’ film came back in 2009 that was almost unanimously panned by critics as a poor attempt to restart the once popular horror franchise.
Vertigo Entertainment is responsible for several highly popular horror films including the recent ‘It’ movie (and upcoming sequel) as well as ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Strangers’ so at least it seems like they have the right pedigree to help reboot the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise.
While no deal is done, James’ production company has been very busy lately including another passion project as he looks to star in a sequel to ‘Space Jam’ with ‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler on board as a producer. Considering James’ love for the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise, this seems like a perfect fit to bring Jason Voorhees back to life on the big screen.
