The “Game of Thrones” finale was not only decisive amongst fans but apparently actors who appeared on the show as well…
For the better part of four seasons on “Game of Thrones,” there was no character more powerful or likely feared than Tywin Lannister.
Now the man who portrayed him is speaking out with his thoughts on the series finale after a great many fans were upset with the outcome of the show after eight seasons.
Charles Dance, who played the Lannister patriarch, was recently made aware of the online fan petition that was started during the final season of “Game of Thrones” to have HBO re-film the episodes with a different story.
While acknowledged that the finale definitely satisfied some people, there were others who definitely did not enjoy what unraveled in those final eight episodes of “Game of Thrones” and while he wasn’t aware of that online petition, it seems in retrospect, Dance would have signed it.
“Well if there was a petition, I would sign it,” Dance told Popculture.com. “I mean, I saw it. I continue to watch the whole series even after I’d been killed off in the lavatory. Because I just thought it’s a fantastic television show, you know? I was very lucky to be part of it. I loved it; there were storylines [where] I wanted to know what was going to happen to these people!
“I know that the finale satisfied a lot of people. It also disappointed a lot of people, and I’m afraid I am in the latter camp.”
Dance paid credit to “Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss for the work they did on the early seasons while adapting George R.R. Martin’s sprawling novels into an award winning series. Unfortunately, he felt like the show lost its way in the latter years, which culminated in a less than satisfying finale.
“I think David and Dan raised the bar when it came to television screenplay writing,” Dance said. “They are phenomenal. And for the whole thing to end up as a committee, I just thought, ‘Hmm, no.’ I would say I was somewhat underwhelmed by.”
Many of the actors who worked on “Game of Thrones” have expressed less than enthusiastic responses to that final season but it’s all over now and there’s no going back.
As for the future of “Game of Thrones,” the original series may be finished but a prequel titled “House of the Dragon” is currently in the works at HBO based on Martin’s “Fire and Blood” novel, which details the history of House Targaryen.
