A pair of “Game of Thrones” veterans in Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will serve as the lead roles in the upcoming HBO adaptation of “The Last of Us”…
The last hope for humanity has been found in a pair of “Game of Thrones” veterans.
Pedro Pascal — best known for his roles as Oberyn Martell on “Game of Thrones” as well as “The Mandalorian” and “Wonder Woman 1984” — has been cast in one of the lead roles for the upcoming adaptation of the popular video game series “The Last of Us” on HBO.
Joining Pascal in the other lead role will be Bella Ramsey — who most will likely remember as Lyanna Mormont, the fiery young leader of House Mormont on “Game of Thrones.” Outside of that role, Ramsey also recently appeared on several episodes of the HBO series “His Dark Materials” as well.
“The Last of Us” is a hugely popular video game first released in 2013 for the Sony Playstation. The game takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where a virus has infected millions around the world, turning them into mindless, rabid savages similar to the rage zombies in “28 Days Later.” The lead character in the story is a smuggler named Joel (who will be played by Pascal), who is hired to safely transport a 14-year-old girl named Elle (Bella Ramsey) across the country. It turns out Elle is infected with this deadly disease but she never transformed into one of the mindless zombies and the hope is that she might be able to create a vaccine that could finally serve as a cure for the infected.
Joel and Elle travel together while facing any number of obstacles during a heartbreaking journey where they must rely on each other for survival.
“The Last of Us” series is being developed by Craig Mazin, who is best known for his award-winning work on the HBO limited series “Chernobyl.”
According to a report from Deadline, Pascal’s casting on “The Last of Us” doesn’t necessarily mean his role on “The Mandalorian” is changing or coming to an end largely because the actor rarely actually appears on screen but rather behind a mask where only his voice is heard. Over two seasons of “The Mandalorian,” Pascal’s face has only been revealed a total of three times so it’s entirely possible he could film the majority of his parts for the “Star Wars” series over a matter of weeks while adding his voice to every episode.
There’s no word yet on when “The Last of Us” will get into production but now that the main two roles have been cast, it’s likely filming will begin sooner rather than later. Production on “The Mandalorian” isn’t expected to start until later this year.
