‘Game of Thrones’ Creator George R.R. Martin Promises He Will Finish ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’

George R.R. Martin knows the wait has been excruciating for his next book but the ‘Game of Thrones’ author promises it will all be worth it…

George R.R. Martin is currently celebrating the release of his latest book but it’s not the one many fans of his writing have been waiting to read for several years.

Just recently, Martin authored ‘Fire and Blood’ — a book that tells the history of the Targaryen family and the dynasty of their rule in Westeros — and it immediately jumped to the No. 1 spot on the New York Times best seller list.

As warm as the reception has been to that book, many fans are still impatiently waiting for Martin to finish work on ‘The Winds of Winter’ — the sixth book in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ series that serves as the source material for the hit HBO TV series ‘Game of Thrones’.

The last book in the series ‘A Dance with Dragons’ was released all the way back in 2011 and Martin has been promising the new novel would arrive in the near future but there’s still no telling when that book might actually hit store shelves. Martin has already planned at least one more book that would conceivably close out the series and that might be even be further into an unknown future when that could be completed.

Meanwhile, ‘Game of Thrones’ has already lapped the source material a couple times over with the series entering the final season in April 2019 with six more episodes. While the show is obviously different from the books, ‘Game of Thrones’ show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have consulted with Martin over his plans for the end of the series and by all accounts, the major story points will remain the same in both.

Martin knows that just about everybody has tired of explanations about why ‘The Winds of Winter’ isn’t finished but he’s getting back to work on the book right now and says he will absolutely deliver that book and a conclusion to his series.

“I know you want WINDS, and I am going to give it to you… but I am delighted that you stayed with me for this one as well. Your patience and unflagging support means the world to me,” Martin wrote on his blog when speaking about the release of ‘Fire and Blood’.
“Enjoy the read. Me, I am back in my fortress of solitude, and back in Westeros. It won’t be tomorrow, and it won’t be next week, but you will get the end of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE. Meanwhile, you have the final season of GAME OF THRONES coming, and the new show that is not yet officially called THE LONG NIGHT being cast, and a couple more shows still being scripted… and a few other cool things in the works as well.”

Martin is serving as a co-creator and executive producer on the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel that he mentioned that has already been picked up as a pilot for HBO. Naomi Watts has been cast in one of the leading roles in a series that’s expected to take place thousands of years before the events in ‘Game of Thrones’ at a time when the White Walkers first attacked the land of the living.

That series is expected to go into production in 2019 but it appears Martin is staying focused on his writing for now as he hopes to deliver ‘The Winds of Winter’ sooner rather than later.
