15 new photos have been released from ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7…
‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 won’t debut until Sunday night, July 16 but HBO released 15 new photos from the upcoming season on Thursday that give us a much deeper look into what’s ahead during the seven episodes this year.
With each photo, we’ll dig into what we’re seeing, the characters involved and some speculation about the plots that could be unveiled based on what’s happening in each one.
It’s clear based on the photos released that a lot has changed since we left ‘Game of Thrones’ at the end of season 6 and with only 13 episodes remaining in the series, it’s likely business is going to pick up quick when the show returns.
Let’s take a look at what we’re seeing in these 15 photos from ‘Game of Thrones’ season 7.
Pictured: Cersei Lannister and Jamie Lannister
What’s Happening: At the end of ‘Game of Thrones’ season 6 following the suicide of Tommen Baratheon, Cersei crowned herself the new queen of the Seven Kingdoms. When her brother Jamie returned home after winning back Riverrun from the Blackfish, he stepped into the Great Hall at the Red Keep where he saw his sister’s coronation. While it appeared at that moment that perhaps Jamie had some misgivings about his sister being crowned — clearly not knowing that his final child was also dead — he’s definitely standing by her side now. It looks like Jamie has taken his place as the leader of the Queensguard with Qyburn already assigned as the Hand of the Queen.
Pictured: Jon Snow
What’s Happening: Not much to tell here except Jon Snow is still looking very much like Jon Snow. He was crowned the new King in the North last season and he’s wearing the robe given to him by his sister Sansa.
Pictured: Sandor “The Hound” Clegane
What’s Happening: After tracking down the men responsible for butchering the people who took him in and saved his life after a fateful fall from atop a cliff, Sandor Clegane was offered a spot amongst the Brotherhood without Banners as they planned to ride north to offer assistance to the greatest threat ever known to mankind — the White Walkers. Judging by the snowy background it looks like Clegane has accepted that offer and he’s riding north to assist the Brotherhood.
Pictured: Samwell Tarly and Gilly
What’s Happening: It looks like Samwell is continuing his training at the Citadel to become a maester with his nose buried in books for his studies while Gilly is right by his side. Typically, women are not allowed in the Citadel so perhaps this is his own private quarters where he’s working on his studies.
Pictured: Arya Stark
What’s Happening: When last we left Arya Stark, she had just murdered Walder Frey as revenge for his part in the Red Wedding where her mother and brother were both killed. Arya was heading home to Winterfell after she left the Faceless Men but she made a stop at the Twins to exact her revenge. It’s unclear where Arya is at in this picture, but it’s clear she’s still traveling as she looks to reunite with her family in the North.
Pictured: Lyanna Mormont with Petyr Baelish in the background
What’s Happening: Lyanna Mormont quickly became a fan favorite last season with her loyalty to Jon Snow and the Stark family. She became famous for her speech in the season finale where she threw her support behind Jon as the new King in the North and it looks like she’s still standing by him judging by this picture. It’s worth nothing, Lord Petyr Baelish aka “Littlefinger” is lurking in the background so clearly he stuck around the North after helping to save the day at the Battle of the Bastards.
Pictured: Daenerys Targaryen
What’s Happening: Daenerys has traded in her old clothes for a more royal look in season 7 as she looks to conquer the Iron Throne and reclaim her family’s legacy. Notice the dragons on her right shoulder, clearly a symbol of her family’s crest.
Pictured: Daenerys, Tyrion. Missendei, Varys, Grey Worm and the Unsullied
What’s Happening: When last we left Daenerys and her queen’s court, they were on ships bound for Westeros where Varys had brokered a deal with both the ruling family in Dorne as well as the last remaining Tyrell as she begins her assault to take back the Iron Throne. Judging by this photo it looks like Daenerys has landed with the Narrow Sea behind her — perhaps this is the moment when she is greeted by her newest allies after landing in Dorne.
Pictured: Tyrion Lannister
What’s Happening: At the end of season 6, Tyrion was named the new Hand of the Queen, which is clearly still his title when the new season begins as noted by the pin on his chest. Not much else to tell in this photo other than Tyrion is flanked by Daenerys’ army behind him.
Pictured: Lord Varys
What’s Happening: Varys helped to broker the deal with the Dornish and the Tyrell family at the end of last season to bring Daenerys back to Westeros in hopes of conquering the Lannister’s and taking back the Iron Throne. He’s now joined Daenerys’ court and “The Spider” always has more than a few tricks up his sleeves.
Pictured: Missandei
What’s Happening: Missandei, the Queen’s interpreter as well as her trusted ally, is also part of Daenerys’ court when she arrives back in Westeros.
Pictured: Davos Seaworth
What’s Happening: Davos teamed up with Jon Snow last season to bring down the Boltons and help him reclaim the North in his family’s name. Davos has been a trusted advisor before and judging by this photo, he’s still helping Jon as he adjusts to life as the King in the North. The King will routinely hear the matters concerning the citizens the most and this picture makes it appear that Davos has an important place by Jon’s side.
Pictured: Petyr Baelish aka “Littlefinger” and Sansa Stark
Whats Happening: Baelish wanted Sansa to take over as the Queen in the North with him by her side but instead her half-brother Jon ended up taking the throne. Baelish has already attempted to get in Sansa’s ear about her rightful place as the Queen of Winterfell and it doesn’t look like those efforts have stopped in season 7. The look on Sansa’s face tells a grim story about what she’s seeing down in the courtyard — perhaps her brother being praised by those around him. Chances are if “Littlefinger” is chirping in her ear, whatever is happening in this photo won’t be good for Jon Snow.
Pictured: Tormund Giantsbane and Brienne of Tarth
What’s Happening: Tormund has made no secret his crush on Brienne and he’s still harboring those same feelings for her in this photo. Brienne has clearly returned from her journey to Riverrun where she attempted to rescue the Blackfish and bring him to the North to help his great niece and nephew. Brienne is certainly a powerful warrior to have as the battle from beyond the Wall could start at any time.
Pictured: Meera Reed and Bran Stark
What’s Happening: Meera and Bran were the only survivors to escape the home of the Three Eyed Raven after the White Walkers attacked last season. They barely escaped — thanks to Hodor — before later being rescued by Bran’s uncle, Benjen Stark, who had been missing for quite some time after he disappeared while on a ranging mission north of the Wall. Benjen helped to lead them back towards the Wall but said he could not enter to the other side. Judging by this picture it looks like Meera and Bran are close to the Wall and perhaps a meeting with the brothers of the Night’s Watch.
