A new “Game of Thrones” spinoff is being developed at HBO, this time focused on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest to conquer Westeros…
The “Game of Thrones” universe at HBO may be expanding again.
A new spinoff series is currently in development at the network with the focus on Aegon Targaryen’s conquest to conquer Westeros and bring the Seven Kingdoms under his singular rule. Mattson Tomlin, who is co-writing “The Batman II” sequel for Matt Reeves, is developing a pilot script for the project.
Of course, HBO has put numerous “Game of Thrones” spinoffs in development even before the original show ended but only two have actually been ordered to series. “House of the Dragon” already debuted to rave reviews with the second season set to debut later this year with the second spinoff called “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight” expected to get into production sometimes in 2024.
The first major spinoff called “The Long Night” would have focused on the war against the White Walkers centuries before the events in “Game of Thrones” happened and a pilot episode was even shot but the project was eventually cancelled all together.
It remains to be seen what will happen with this latest project but HBO continues to invest in a future with “Game of Thrones,” especially considering the success of “House of the Dragon” so far.
The story for this latest spinoff would take place prior to the events in “House of the Dragon” when Aegon Targaryen and his sister wives Visenya and Rhaenys rode on the backs of their dragons and conquered six of the seven kingdoms in Westeros. The only kingdom that managed to survive his conquest was Dorne. Up until that moment, all of the various kingdoms survived under rule from their own particular monarch but Aegon sought to bring all of Westeros under his singular rule.
It’s a story referenced often in both “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones.”
There’s no telling if the series focused around Aegon’s Conquest will end up as another major “Game of Thrones” project but putting the show into development is the first major step.
