‘Suicide Squad 2’ has a new writer and director on board…
Gavin O’Connor — best known for his work on the Ben Affleck led film ‘The Accountant’ as well as the critically acclaimed mixed martial arts film ‘Warrior’ — will write and direct the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad 2’ film from Warner Bros.
The studio had been searching for a director for several months after it was decided that David Ayer, who led the production on the first ‘Suicide Squad’ film would not be returning for the sequel.
Instead, Ayer is developing ‘Gotham City Sirens’ — a female villain led movie for Warner Bros., which co-stars ‘Suicide Squad’ actress Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
O’Connor will now take over for ‘Suicide Squad 2’ with no set date yet for production or release on the film.
The first ‘Suicide Squad’ movie raked in over $745 million at the box office but was not a hit with critics or audiences. The film currently has a 25-percent rating at movie review site RottenTomatoes.com.
O’Connor will attempt to strike up some new magic with a stacked cast that includes Robbie as well as Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Joel Courtney and Cara Delevingne. Jared Leto was also in the original ‘Suicide Squad’ film playing the Joker but there’s no word on whether or not he’d return for the sequel.
For now, O’Connor will get to work on a script before setting a schedule for production on ‘Suicide Squad 2’.
