“House of the Dragon” will be expanding the cast for season 2 with several key roles revealed as production gets underway…
With “House of the Dragon” season 2 production officially underway, several new roles have been filled with key characters joining the show as the Targaryen civil war explodes across Westeros.
When season 1 ended, Rhaenyra Targaryen decided to fight for the throne she was promised by her father prior to his passing but her thirst to rain down fire and blood was only strengthened after she sent her son Lucerys to meet with House Baratheon and he sadly met his demise after he was cut down by his cousin, Aemond Targaryen on the back of his dragon Vhagar.
At the same time, Rhaenyra’s younger brother Aegon II Targaryen was sworn in as the new King thanks to help from his mother Alicent and her treacherous father Otto Hightower. Now the stage is set for the Dance of the Dragons — the bloodiest and deadliest war in the history of Westeros.
Here’s a breakdown on the new characters joining the show in “House of the Dragon” season 2 with a brief synopsis on how they tie into the series:
Gayle Rankin — best known for her roles on “Perry Mason” and “GLOW” — will portray Alys Rivers, who is a bastard of House Strong and rumored to be a witch currently living at Harrenhal — the supposedly cursed castle that was set on fire last season, which killed several members of House Strong including Lyonel Strong and his son, Ser Harwin Strong. Alys will be an important character to watch in season 2, especially with potential ties to Aemond Targaryen.
Simon Russell Beale — best known for his past role in “Penny Dreadful” — will play Ser Simon Strong, who is great-uncle to Larys Strong and the current ruler over Harrenhal following the death of Lyonel Strong.
Freddie Fox — best known for his roles in “The Crown” and “Slow Horses” — will portray Ser Gwayne Hightower, the younger brother of Queen Alicent Hightower and the youngest son to Otto Hightower. Gwayne made a brief appearance in “House of the Dragon” season 1 when he was defeated in a joust with Daemon Targaryen in the debut episode.
Abubakar Salim — best known for his role in “Raised by Wolves” — will play Alyn of Hull, a master sailor with deep ties to House Velaryon. Saying much more would probably be a spoiler but it’s not hard to figure out how Alyn might play a crucial role in the upcoming war.
Production is already underway on the 8 episode second season of “House of the Dragon” with the show expected to debut on HBO sometime in 2024.
