Milly Alcock will take the skies yet again except this time not on the back of a dragon after landing a role as Supergirl in the new DC film universe led by James Gunn….

There’s a new Supergirl in the DC film universe.

Milly Alcock — best known for playing young Rhaenyra Targaryen on the HBO “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon” — has landed the role as Supergirl with her own solo film already in the works.

The 23-year-old Australian born actress beat out “CODA” actress Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly, who actually voiced Supergirl in a trio of DC animated features, to land the part.

Gunn confirmed the casting on social media on Monday.

“Milly is a fantastically talented young actor, and I’m incredibly excited about her being a part of the DCU,” Gunn said. “Yes, I first became aware of her in House of the Dragon but I was blown away by her varied auditions and screen tests for Supergirl. She embodies Kara as envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely and Ana Nogueira.”

The upcoming film starring Alcock will be titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” which is based on a comic book series from King and Evely that came out in 2022.

It’s expected that Alcock will appear in at least one DC project before starring in her own film but there’s no official confirmation that she’ll do a cameo on the upcoming “Superman: Legacy” movie that Gunn is personally writing and directing. That’s the film that will officially relaunch the new DC shared universe across film, television and animation with Gunn leading the way creatively.

Gunn previously announced plans for the Supergirl film when he laid out his ambitions for the new DC shared universe and revealed that she’ll be a much different character than some versions in the past.

“In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl,” Gunn explained.

As of now, there’s no writer or director attached to “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” but there’s already a star in place with Alcock now landing the lead role.
