More than 25 years after the original film was released, a sequel to “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is currently in the works at Sony with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson on board to direct.
Robinson received rave reviews for her recent film “Do Revenge” on Netflix, which starred Cami Mendes of “Riverdale” fame along with Maya Hawke, best known for her role in “Stranger Things.”
Now here’s the real kicker — Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are both in talks to potentially return to the slasher franchise, which was launched by “Scream” writer Kevin Williamson.
The original film starred Hewitt and Prinze alongside Ryan Phillippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar as four friends from high school who get into a tragic car accident but cover up their crime only to have it come back to haunt them a year later when a killer returns for revenge.
While there’s no word on plot details for the proposed sequel, Robinson and writer Leah McKendrick worked on the idea together before pitching the project to Sony following the success that the “Scream” franchise has found after the fifth film in that series became a hit in 2022 (with another sequel already on the way in 2023 as well).
The sequel will reportedly seek to bring back past cast members along with newer cast members in a passing-of-the-torch for the franchise, which is exactly what “Scream” did after the fifth film brought back several legacy characters while also introducing an all new group to the series.
Apparently, Hewitt and Prinze were both receptive to returning to do another “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel after hearing the pitch made by Robinson and McKendrick. Assuming those deals get locked down, then the sequel will likely move forward at Sony.
The original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” pulled in more than $125 million at the box office on a $17 million budget and spawned a sequel — “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” that also featured returning cast members from the first film. More recently, Amazon attempted a reboot with an “I Know What You Did Last Summer” series but the show was canceled after only one season.
