James Gunn has now responded to the report about the future of DC studios including plans to scrap “Wonder Woman 3″…
James Gunn has now responded to the report that a major overhaul is likely happening at DC Studios now that he and Peter Safran have been hired as co-CEO’s with the direct purpose of reshaping and redirecting the future of film, television and animation.
According to the news from The Hollywood Reporter, “Wonder Woman 3” was essentially “dead” after director Patty Jenkins’ version of the story for the third film in the franchise was rejected. Separate reports stated that Jenkins had already walked away from the film before Gunn and Safran officially took over after she clashed with executives when they rejected her plans for the movie.
In addition to the “Wonder Woman 3” news, the initial report also stated that a complete overhaul could be coming at DC with legacy actors like Henry Cavill and Jason Momoa exiting roles for Superman and Aquaman as the studio starts moving towards a more cohesive and shared universe, similar to what Marvel has developed over the past 14 years.
“So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not,” Gunn wrote on Twitter. “Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning. Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.
“But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not. We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.”
Gunn and Safran were specifically hired to lead DC Studios across film, TV and animation with plans to hopefully move beyond all the various films that had been made previously including a fractured universe started by director Zack Snyder and create a more cohesive, shared story.
While that doesn’t necessarily mean every actor attached to previous films in the DC Universe, Gunn and Safran may ultimately make that choice just to give DC a fresh start while also moving on from past iterations of those characters.
For now, Gunn and Safran are expected to meet with Warner Discover CEO David Zaslav next week to lay out the extensive plans they’ve built for the future of the DC Extended Universe. Unfortunately, it appears details about those plans won’t become public for quite some time.
“As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait,” Gunn said. “We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.”

While Gunn and Safran will obviously be making major changes at DC Studios, there are still several more films yet to come that have already been wrapped including “The Flash” film starring Ezra Miller as well as “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”
Gunn and Safran will also reportedly not have any oversight regarding “The Batman” film and TV universe being developed by Matt Reeves as well as the upcoming “Joker 2” movie helmed by Todd Phillips.
