Another beloved horror film from outside the United States is being remade.
This time around it’s the Danish film “Speak No Evil,” which was almost universally praised as one of the most horrifying movies of 2022 after it was first released and eventually streamed on Shudder. Now Blumhouse is set to remake the movie with James McAvoy set for the lead role in the upcoming film, which is slated to release on August 9, 2024.
The original “Speak No Evil” centered around a Danish family on holiday in Tuscany when they end up befriending a Dutch couple, who eventually invite them to travel down to the Netherlands for a reunion and another vacation. What is supposed to be an idyllic weekend among friends slowly transforms into a waking nightmare with quite possibly one of the most devastating endings in recent horror history.
“Speak No Evil” went onto earn 11 nominations at the Danish Film Awards, which is the equivalent to the Oscars in Denmark. The film was also included among the top 5 horror films as listed by Rewind of the Living Dead in 2022.
James Watkins — best known for his work on the horror film “Eden Lake” as well as directing the “Black Mirror” episode titled “Shut Up and Dance” — will write and direct the remake.
As for McAvoy, he will team up with Blumhouse again after previously working with the studio on “Split” — the psychological thriller directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Of course, McAvoy is also well known for his work in films such as “It: Chapter 2” and the latest “X-Men” films including “X-Men: First Class” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”
