Jeremy Irons will be in the starring role as part of Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series coming to HBO…
Jeremy Irons — most recently recognized for his roles in Justice League and Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice — has landed the starring role in the upcoming Watchmen series from creator Damon Lindelof for HBO.
The details surrounding Irons’ role remain a secret, which means he may be playing a character from the original Watchmen universe in the new series.
Lindelof had previously teased that his Watchmen series isn’t an adaptation of the original comic books written by Alan Moore but rather a ‘remix’, which sounded an awful lot like a sequel of sorts taking place after the events of the source material.
That means Irons could be playing one of the original Watchmen but set in a present day, which would make him age appropriate for the role. Given Irons’ look, is it possible he could be playing a modern day Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias?
Right now, Lindelof is just excited to work with somebody he’s dreamed about casting for years and now he finally has his opportunity.
“When I was 14, I got a job as an usher at the Route 4 Cineplex Odeon Tenplex (we had to call it that when we answered the phone) with hopes of watching every movie on every screen over and over again. As there were always ten in rotation, something had to be truly special to stand out. One that did was Cronenberg’s DEAD RINGERS, the tale of two homicidal gynecologists who happened to be identical twin brothers,” Lindelof wrote on Instagram. “I was in awe of the raw brilliance of the lead actor… and his brother was just as good as he was!
“I vowed then and there to one day work with at least one of them. That day is today. Mr. Irons… I am honored. Thanks for taking the watch, man.”
Irons joins a cast that also includes Regina King, Tim Blake Nelson, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., Adelaide Clemens, and Andrew Howard.
There’s no word yet on when Watchmen will begin filming but with casting the lead role with Irons, it would seem like production would start relatively soon with the show then likely to debut on HBO in 2019.
