Joe Cornish offers an update on his work on “Attack the Block 2” and the importance to make the sequel as great as past films like “Aliens” or “Terminator 2″…
Writer and director Joe Cornish knows expectations are very high for the upcoming “Attack the Block 2” sequel that he’s currently developing alongside star and collaborator John Boyega.
The first film released in 2011, which served as Boyega’s breakout role long before he was cast in “Star Wars,” has become a cult classic and favorite among both horror and science fiction fans. “Attack the Block” follows a youth street gang that band together to defend their neighborhood from invading aliens.
With more than 10 years passed since the first film was released, Cornish revealed in 2021 that he was developing a sequel with Boyega set to return to his role as Moses while also helping him write the script and serve as an executive producer on the film. During an appearance on The Kingcast, Cornish offered an update on the sequel and the pressure he’s putting on himself to deliver a film that will satisfy every fan of the original “Attack the Block.”
“We’re doing our due diligence in building the screenplay and taking the same amount of care we took with the first one,” Cornish said. “But we’re very, very quietly confident and excited about what we’ve got.
“We think about Alien and Aliens and Terminator and Terminator 2, and we wanna take a shot at doing our version of what people did for [those movies].”
While sequels rarely equal much less surpass an original film, James Cameron’s “Aliens” and “Terminator 2” are often hailed as arguably two of the best follow up movies to a pair of classics in “Alien” and “The Terminator.”
Those are lofty expectations for “Attack the Block 2,” but Cornish promises that he’s hard at work alongside Boyega in developing a worthwhile sequel that will hopefully do the same once that film finally gets released to the public.
“The nice thing about the first movie was, nobody was expecting it,” Cornish said. “Nobody knew who John [Boyega] was or who I was, certainly, outside of UK comedy circles. And we put a lot of work into the first one! Obviously, I can make stuff up about aliens quite easily, but the other stuff – the aspects of reality that we folded the fantasy into – we did a lot of research for, and so we are currently doing that same thing.
“We have a very detailed treatment and a storyline we’re very, very excited about – and when I say ‘we,’ I mean me and John Boyega, who [I’m co-producing the film with] and consulting very closely with – and we’re doing all the research to make sure we get it right.”
Cornish hasn’t said when he expects the script to be completed or when the film might go into production but there’s obviously a lot of anticipation about this sequel from a hardcore audience that has loved “Attack the Block” for the past 12 years.
