“Joker” is now the film with the most nominations at the 2020 Academy Awards after the full list of nominees were announced on Monday…
“Joker” is no laughing matter.
After the Todd Phillips’ directed film took home more than $1 billion at the box office, “Joker” has been rewarded with 11 total nominations — the most of any film — at the 2020 Academy Awards.
While many of the nominations for “Joker” aren’t necessarily a surprise, the total haul in nominations definitely shocked more than a few pundits who expected “The Irishman” or possibly “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” to lead the way. Instead, it’s “Joker” with the most total nominations heading into the award ceremony on February 9.
“Joker” snagged a Best Picture nomination as well as a Best Actor nod for Joaquin Phoenix, who just recently took home the Golden Globe award in the same category. Phillips also earned a nomination for Best Director, which was somewhat surprising given the star-studded field for this year’s award considerations.
While “Joker” was at the top with 11 nominations, Martin Scorsese’s three-hour epic gangster film “The Irishman,” Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and Sam Mendes’ film “1917” followed closely behind with 10 nominations each. “1917” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” both took home Golden Globe awards just recently for best film (Best Drama and Best Comedic Film or Musical).
Despite becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, “Avengers: Endgame” only snagged one major nomination for Visual Effects but it’s highly unlikely Kevin Feige and the powers that be at Marvel Studios will be losing any sleep while power napping on stacks of $100 bills.
