‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter isn’t going to stick around ‘Mayans M.C.’ past season 2 if the show gets renewed by FX…
Kurt Sutter will not return to ‘Mayans M.C.’ for a third season if the show gets renewed by FX.
Ahead of the second season premiere, Sutter broke the news that he would be stepping away as co-showrunner for the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ spinoff to allow Elgin James to steer the ship in a solo capacity. As of now, FX hasn’t officially renewed ‘Mayans M.C.’ for a third season but season 2 is just getting ready to debut next week on September 3.
“It’s time for the white man to leave the building,” Sutter joked when speaking to the audience at the Hollywood premiere for ‘Mayans M.C.’ season 2.
Sutter’s reasoning is that a show like ‘Mayans M.C.’, which centers on a Mexican motorcycle club that originated on ‘Sons of Anarchy’ should have a person of color in charge of directing where the series goes in future seasons.
James, who co-created the series alongside Sutter, would assume solo showrunning duties if the show comes back for season 3.
“Kurt Sutter changed my life,” James told EW on Tuesday. “I couldn’t get a job in a Walmart or a Costco as a violent ex-felon. He took a shot on me … I don’t know what he saw in me … and the last two years I’ve learned so much from him that it’s left me speechless, really. I love everyone on our show so much. We’ve become a family. I’m so excited about what we get to do.”
‘Mayans M.C.’ served as a spinoff to the wildly popular ‘Sons of Anarchy’, which ran for seven seasons on FX. In the wake of the end of that show, Sutter teased a potential prequel for ‘Sons of Anarchy’ but ultimately moved onto ‘Mayans M.C.’ instead as a spinoff set in thee same universe.
Sutter didn’t appear at the San Diego Comic Con panel for ‘Mayans M.C.’ back in July, which debuted part of the first episode of season 2. Instead, James led the panel along with the cast from the series.
While Sutter may be leaving ‘Mayans M.C.’, he still has an overall development deal at FX for any of his future shows over the next few years.
‘Mayans M.C.’ returns to kick off season 2 next Tuesday night, September 3 at 10 p.m. ET on FX.
