Linda Hamilton will return to her iconic role as Sarah Connor in the new ‘Terminator’ film from James Cameron…
Sarah Connor is back.
Linda Hamilton — who starred in the original ‘Terminator’ as well as the sequel ‘T2: Judgment Day’ — will return to the ‘Terminator’ franchise for the new movie from creator James Cameron and director Tim Miller.
Cameron announced the news at a private event celebrating the ‘Terminator’ franchise this week.
“As meaningful as she was to gender and action stars everywhere back then, it’s going to make a huge statement to have that seasoned warrior that she’s become return,” Cameron said.
“There are 50-year-old, 60-year-old guys out there killing bad guys, but there isn’t an example of that for women.”
The new movie will be based on a story written by Cameron with Miller — best known for his work on the first ‘Deadpool’ movie — attached to direct the project.
Cameron hasn’t been directly involved with the ‘Terminator’ franchise since the sequel came out in 1991. Cameron and Miller have also assembled the writer’s room to craft a new trilogy of ‘Terminator’ movies that will include David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy), Charles Eglee and Josh Friedman, who created ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’, which was a Terminator spinoff on television.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is also returning to the ‘Terminator’ franchise as well after he’s appeared in nearly every version of the story throughout history from the very first movie until now. This time around, Schwarzenegger will reunite with both Cameron and Hamilton as they look to reignite the sci-fi franchise.
While very few details are being revealed from the story being crafted by Cameron, the new ‘Terminator’ movie is expected to be a direct sequel to ‘Terminator 2’ rather than any other continuation of the storyline that currently exists.
Cameron also hopes to cast a new batch of characters for the ‘Terminator’ franchise to star in the upcoming movie alongside Hamilton and Schwarzenegger as the stalwarts held over from the original films.
“We’re starting a search for an 18-something woman to be the new centerpiece of the new story,” Cameron said. “We still fold time. We will have characters from the future and the present. There will be mostly new characters, but we’ll have Arnold and Linda’s characters to anchor it.”
There’s no word yet when the new ‘Terminator’ film will be released but obviously with casting underway it appears production on the movie could start sooner rather than later.
