The CW is gambling on all sorts of new original content with several pilots ordered on Wednesday following previous news that the network had already picked up a pilot for ‘Batwoman’ starring Ruby Rose.
Four new pilots were ordered this week including a new series that will be considered a spinoff of the ultra-popular ‘Riverdale’ as well as an updated version of the ‘Lost Boys’ based on the 1980’s cult classic starring Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland.
The ‘Lost Boys’ project has been in the works for a while now at The CW with the original plans centered around an anthology series that would tell all sorts of different tales about vampires haunting the California town of Santa Carla. The new version of the show that’s being ordered to pilot is an actual series from creator Rob Thomas (iZombie) that will center around the secret underground world of vampires in the town of Santa Carla.
Here’s the synopsis from The CW:
“After the sudden death of their father, two brothers move to Santa Carla with their mother, who hopes to start anew in the town where she grew up. But the brothers find themselves drawn deeper and deeper into the seductive world of Santa Carla’s eternally beautiful and youthful undead.”
There’s no word yet if the new ‘Lost Boys’ series will attempt to bring back any of the original cast members for at least a cameo appearance on the show. Right now the series is just a pilot so it’s tough to know how many big guns they’ll try to pull out for the first episode.
Meanwhile, another ‘Riverdale’ spinoff is coming from Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who already serves as the creator and show runner behind ‘Riverdale’ as well as ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, which started out as a CW pilot and ended up as a breakout hit for Netflix instead.
The newest series is titled ‘Katy Keene’, which is based around four iconic Archie Comics characters set in the same universe as ‘Riverdale’ but not expected to have any direct ties to the original show. ‘Katy Keene’ will see those four characters relocate to New York in hopes of making it big in different facets of the entertainment industry.
“The musical dramedy chronicles the origins and struggles of four aspiring artists trying to make it on Broadway, on the runway and in the recording studio.”
In addition to those two shows and ‘Batwoman’, The CW has also ordered a ‘Jane the Virgin’ spinoff pilot as well as a ‘Nancy Drew’ series pilot from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. Schwartz is best known for creating the cult hit ‘Chuck’ as well as ‘Runaways’ — the Marvel series which has already run for two seasons on Hulu.
