A sequel to the breakout horror hit “M3GAN” has officially been ordered with a release date already set in 2025…
“M3GAN” will be back.
On the heels of a very successful opening for the horror film from James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse, a sequel called “M3GAN 2.0” has already been ordered with the film set for release on January 17, 2025.
Screenwriter Akela Cooper is returning to pen the script for the sequel after also writing the original film based on a story from Wan. There’s no word on the plot for “M3GAN 2.0” but both Allison Williams — who played the tech genius behind the killer robot — and Violet McGraw — who portrayed her orphaned niece — are both slated to return.
The film has earned over $91 million at the worldwide box office thus far on a $12 million budget, which essentially guaranteed that a sequel would be ordered.
The original movie centers around a robotics designer played by Williams, who has her life turned upside down when her sister and brother-in-law die in a tragic car accident leaving only their daughter alive. She then begins caring for her niece without any real sense of what it takes to raise a child. So she decides to use a robot — Model 3 Generative Android — to befriend her niece and help her adapt to her new surroundings.
Needless to say, the android’s marching orders to protect her niece at all costs results in a whole lot of mayhem and murder. There was also a subtle scene in the original that showed an assistant working for the CEO downloading the design specifications for M3GAN, which could result in mass production of the android and a perfect setup for the sequel.
For now, Cooper will get working on the script with production on the film likely to start in late 2023 or early 2024 to prepare for the Jan. 2025 release date.
