Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will work with Lucasfilm to develop his own take on the ‘Star Wars’ universe…
When the man who orchestrated the most successful run of films in history calls with an idea for a ‘Star Wars’ film, you listen.
Kevin Feige — Marvel Studios president and the architect behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe — will now be crossing over to develop a ‘Star Wars’ film for his friends over at Lucasfilm. Both companies are obviously operated under the same umbrella at Disney.
The stunning news comes just three months ahead of the release of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, that will bring the Skywalker saga to an end after nine films stretching back to George Lucas’ original release of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ in 1977.
As Lucasfilm looks to branch out the ‘Star Wars’ universe beyond the Skywalker saga, the company has already struck deals with filmmakers such as Rian Johnson and ‘Game of Thrones’ showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss to develop two new trilogies set in a galaxy far, far away.
Now Lucasfilm is offering Feige the chance to get involved with the ‘Star Wars’ family in just about the least riskiest move in film history considering his unprecedented run over a decade while building Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“We are excited about the projects Kathy and the Lucasfilm team are working on, not only in terms of Star Wars but also Indiana Jones and reaching into other parts of the company including Children of Blood and Bone with Emma Watts and Fox. With the close of the Skywalker Saga, Kathy [Kennedy] is pursuing a new era in Star Wars storytelling, and knowing what a die-hard fan Kevin is, it made sense for these two extraordinary producers to work on a Star Wars film together,” Disney co-chair Alan Horn said in a statement released to the Hollywood Reporter.
Feige has said in the past that he’s a massive ‘Star Wars’ fan, which makes him a seemingly perfect choice to tackle a story set in that world as the franchise looks to move beyond the legacy characters from the first nine movies.
Of course, Feige has his hands full right now as he prepares to help launch Disney+ later this year with a huge slate of Marvel television shows in the work not to mention the upcoming start to Marvel Phase 4, which will feature a whole new storyline as they move past Thanos and the Infinity Saga.
There’s now word on how quickly Feige will get involved with developing a ‘Star Wars’ project but he has reportedly spoken to at least one ‘A’ list star about a potential role when his movie gets going. Is it possible that Feige would re-team with Robert Downey Jr.?
No matter what happens, Feige getting involved with ‘Star Wars’ can only be seen as a win-win for Disney as they continue to churn out a slew of billion dollar franchise films.
