‘Iron Fist’ is the first casualty of the Marvel television deal at Netflix after two seasons on the streaming service…
A much improved second season of ‘Iron Fist’ wasn’t enough to save the series from cancellation.
On Friday, Netflix announced that they have axed the Marvel series starring Finn Jones, Jessica Henwick, and Tom Pelphrey, which is the first of the Marvel television series on the streaming service to get cancelled.
“Marvel’s Iron Fist will not return for a third season on Netflix,” Marvel and Netflix said in a joint statement to Deadline. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is proud of the series and grateful for all of the hard work from our incredible cast, crew and showrunners. We’re thankful to the fans who have watched these two seasons, and for the partnership we’ve shared on this series. While the series on Netflix has ended, the immortal Iron Fist will live on.”
It’s somewhat surprising news considering ‘Iron Fist’ season 2 was praised for a much improved 10-episode order after the first season was widely panned by critics.
Neflix had five Marvel series prior to this cancellation with ‘Iron Fist’, ‘Daredevil’, ‘Jessica Jones’, ‘Luke Cage’ and ‘The Punisher’. There is a chance that ‘Iron Fist’ could be resurrected under the new Disney streaming service that is expected to launch next year but that hasn’t been determined yet.
All of the other Marvel series at Netflix have already been renewed or currently in production with the exception of ‘Luke Cage’w, which is expected to receive a third season order any day now. ‘Daredevil’ season 3 will drop on Netflix on Oct. 19 followed by season 2 of ‘The Punisher’ and then season 3 of ‘Jessica Jones’.
The end of ‘Iron Fist’ season 2 saw Danny Rand hand over the power of the iron fist to his girlfriend Colleen Wing and many fans hoped that might spawn an offshoot series alongside New York detective Misty Knight as the ‘Daughters of the Dragon’ — a duo popularized in the comic books. It’s impossible to know at this time if that’s even an option on the table now that ‘Iron Fist’ has been cancelled.
