It was 15 years ago when writer and director Alex Garland first got an idea for a new script that he wanted to develop. At the time, Garland was only a screenwriter because his directorial debut didn’t come until 2014 with his film “Ex-Machina.”
The original idea that haunted Garland was a straight forward horror film centered around The Green Man — a creature of folklore that often appears in architecture around the world yet the meaning behind the symbols are often left up to interpretation.
Eventually, Garland moved away from The Green Man and instead became focused on the idea of one actor playing all of the male roles in the movie, which would then become the central plot point and mystery surrounding his ever evolving story.
The film finally settled on a grieving woman who escapes to the English countryside to get her mind off the tragic death of her husband but she soon realizes that not only is she not alone but the men in this quaint little village are all very much the same…
