A film based on the Grady Hendrix novel “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” is being developed by Endeavor Content with Damon Thomas set to direct.
Thomas is best known for his work on “Killing Eve” as well as “Penny Dreadful” and he’ll be directing the movie, which is described as “The Exorcist by way of Heathers.”
Here’s the synopsis for the book:
“The year is 1988. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny-dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act…different. She’s moody. She’s irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she’s nearby. Abby’s investigation leads her to some startling discoveries—and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil?”
The book has received overwhelmingly positive reviews with a cover that looks like a VHS tape pulled off the horror rack at a Blockbuster in the 1980s.
Elsie Fisher, who recently starred in the film “Eighth Grade” as well as the Hulu series “Castle Rock” will play Abby in the upcoming film while Amiah Miller, who appeared in the recent sequel “War for the Planet of the Apes” will portray Gretchen.
Cathy Ang, and Rachel Ogechi Kanu have also been added to the cast for the coming-of-age horror film with a serious twist.
While deals are still being finalized, the project will likely end up at Amazon Studios.
