Two-time Academy Award nominated actress Naomi Watts will star in the upcoming Amazon remake of “Goodnight Mommy,” which was a cult hit out of Austria in 2014.
Matt Sobel will direct the film with Kyle Warren providing the script.
“Goodnight Mommy” became a cult classic after it was first released with Austria nominating the movie as its selection for the Best Foreign Language film for the Academy Awards.
The plot of the original film follows a pair of twin brothers, who are sent to stay with their mother for the summer but they are shocked when she returns home with her face covered in bandages after having plastic surgery. The twins grow more and more concerned as her behavior become erratic and volatile, which leads to them believing that she’s not actually their mother beneath the bandages. What happens next is a series of terrifying moments that defined “Goodnight Mommy” as one of the top psychological thrillers when it was first released.
Of course, Watts is no stranger to horror or psychological thrillers after previously appearing in films such as “The Ring” and its sequel as well as “Funny Games” and frequent collaborations with David Lynch in “Mulholland Drive” as well as the recent “Twin Peaks” revival at Showtime.
