The “New Mutants” movie will finally land in theaters this year with a new trailer just released — two years after the first teaser dropped…
“The New Mutants” will get a shot at a theatrical release after all.
The long gestating project from director Josh Boone seemed all but dead on arrival after Disney purchased the majority of assets from FOX, which included the final two X-Men films that had already been produced. “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” came out in 2019 and bombed hard at the box office, not to mention being a disaster with critics, which led many to believe that Disney and Marvel might just shelve “The New Mutants” permanently.
Now it appears the studio is ready to unleashed “The New Mutants” into theaters with a new trailer released along with a debut date on April 3 in theaters nationwide. Here’s the synopsis of the movie:
“An original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.”
“The New Mutants” had always been teased as something of a superhero horror film with the characters in this movie from the X-Men universe yet none off them had previously appeared in any of the X-Men movies. The concept was different enough to keep fans intrigued but then once Disney closed the sale to purchase the majority of assets from FOX — including this movie — it seemed like the project had all but been forgotten.
It was obviously resurrected with a full theatrical release in the works now but it’s impossible to say how much push Disney will put behind “The New Mutants” given the fact that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will soon be taking over the entire X-Men franchise while adopting those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Add to that, the generic use of “Another Brick in the Wall” by Pink Floyd — a song that is seemingly used in almost every movie involving a school — doesn’t exactly bode well for the future of this film.
Still, “The New Mutants” will arrive in April so take a look at the new trailer to see what lies ahead in this unique take on the genre.
