A trio of new “Star Wars” films were announced on Friday including the return of Daisy Ridley as Rey after appearing in the latest trilogy…

A trio of new “Star Wars” films are on the way including a sequel that will take place 15 years after the events in “Rise of Skywalker” that will see Daisy Ridley return to the franchise as Rey Skywalker.

The news was announced during the “Star Wars” celebration in Europe.

Ridley came on stage after the announcement as she joins director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy in the latest “Star Wars” film where her character Rey will look to rebuild the Jedi order similar to what Luke Skywalker attempted in the wake of the events from “Return of the Jedi.”

The last “Star Wars” trilogy ended with Rey discovering that she was the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine but she rose up against her familial ties and ultimately helped to ensure he would never rise to power again. in the end, Rey took the name Skywalker to honor Luke and Leia, who were formative in her training to become a Jedi.

Another “Star Wars” film will be directed by longtime collaborator Dave Filoni as he seeks to wrap up the interconnected stories being told in “The Mandalorian,” “The Book of Boba Fett” “Ahsoka” and other Disney+ series. It’s unclear if the film will serve as the final chapter in those TV series but Filoni has worked hand-in-hand with Jon Favreau on all of those series so it certainly sounds like that film will serve as the conclusion to those particular stories.

Finally, James Mangold was announced as a third director joining the “Star Wars” universe, which comes after he also directed the new film “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” Mangold’s film will go back in time to the dawn of the Jedi order.

There’s no exact timeline when these films might go into production much less when any will be released but this appears to be the most definitive direction the franchise as taken after several stutter steps with other directors being named to projects in recent years including a films led by Patty Jenkins and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, which were later both shelved.
