“Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins is traveling to a galaxy far, far away for her next project as she tackles “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron”…
The next “Star Wars” movie has found a director.
Patty Jenkins — best known for her work on “Wonder Woman” as well as the upcoming sequel “Wonder Woman 1984” — has signed onto direct “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron,” which is due out around Christmas 2023.
The news was announced during a Disney investors meeting on Thursday.
While details about the film itself have not been revealed, the Rogue Squadron is a well known term amongst longtime “Star Wars” fans.
Rogue Squadron refers to an elite group of X-wing pilots headed up by Luke Skywalker after he joined the group during “Star Wars: A New Hope.” The group took on its name in part as tribute to the Rogue One team responsible for stealing the plans for the original Death Star that allowed the Rebel Alliance to find a weakness and blow up the Empire’s ultimate weapon before it could take out another planet like Alderaan. Of course, Rogue One was the group led by Jyn Erso in the film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” that featured the sacrifice that team made in order to send the plans of the Death Star to the rebels before all of them were killed.
According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, “Star Wars: Rogue Squadron” will usher in a “new era” to “introduce a new generation of Star Wars pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing high-speed thrill ride.”
Jenkins will also become the first woman to ever direct a “Star Wars” franchise film. She shared her excitement for the project as well as her personal connection to the story in a video posted on Twitter following the announcement.
