James Gunn’s series “Peacemaker” will return for season 2 on HBO Max after getting renewed on Wednesday ahead of the season 1 finale…
Just a day before the “Peacemaker” season 1 finale lands on HBO Max, the series has officially been renewed for season 2.
The action-comedy series starring John Cena has been a breakout hit for the streaming service with James Gunn serving as the showrunner while also writing all eight episodes in the first season. Gunn will return to those same duties while also planning to write all of the episodes in season 2 as well.
“Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max,” Gunn said in a statement.
“To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can’t wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in Season Two!”
“Peacemaker” became a series for HBO Max after the character originated in Gunn’s film “The Suicide Squad,” which was released in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The series follows a rag-tag team of agents dispatched by Amanda Waller to investigate a mysterious alien invasion happening on Earth with Peacemaker (Cena) serving as the muscle for the group. “Peacemaker” has not only been a solid performer for HBO Max but the series has received rave reviews from critics as well.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled by the response to Peacemaker and the experience of playing this character,” Cena said. “Thank you to James Gunn, Peter Safran, HBO Max, the crew, and my castmates who worked tirelessly to make this unforgettable series.”
It’s expected that the main cast for “Peacemaker” will return for season 2 with Cena leading the way alongside Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma and Steve Agee.
