In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to dust off our powdered wigs and head to the ballot box as we review the 2024 slasher film “Founders Day”…
Sibling duo Erik and Carson Bloomquist grew up loving horror movies but they were particularly influenced by the 1996 Wes Craven classic “Scream,” which reinvigorated the slasher genre that previously ruled the 1980s.
The brothers were so inspired by that film and others that they started developing ideas of their own with Erik actually earning a spot among the top 200 directors for the HBO series “Project Greenlight.” For their latest project, the Bloomquists decided to pay homage to “Scream” and other 90s slashers with a film that dealt with high stakes in a small town.
Together with famed makeup designer Tony Gardner, who previously worked on films like “Zombieland” and the “Chucky” franchise, designed a mask for a killer that represented both happiness and tragedy and wielded a weapon that was both a gavel of justice and a blade of revenge.
The story takes place in a town about to face an election with a heated showdown between mayoral candidates ahead of the annual Founders Day festival. When bodies start turning up dead and cryptic messages are left behind at the scene of the crime, both the mayor and her chief rival are left wondering if someone is gunning for them or just trying to ruin the spirit of the season…
