Rose Glass had a very odd experience with her first feature film that was due out in 2019 but because of the global pandemic, the movie didn’t really connect with audiences until two years later.
“Saint Maud” became a favorite amongst horror fans as Glass explored the loneliness of a pious nurse struggling with her own sanity while caring for a woman who didn’t want to be saved. The film was almost universally beloved by critics and audiences alike but Glass had other ideas for her second movie than just traveling back into another horror film.
Instead, Glass focused on an aspect of body image involving women that broke apart from almost anything else she’d ever seen with an idea about focusing a story on a female bodybuilder obsessed with getting bigger and stronger.
Somewhere along the way, Glass and her co-writer twisted that narrative around a despondent woman managing a local gym who is stuck living under the thumb of her crime boss father when she crosses paths with the bodybuilder and what unravels is a sweaty, gritty, erotic crime noir set in the southwest in the 1980s…
