After his first screenplay called “Hereditary” started gaining traction in Hollywood, writer and director Ari Aster was approached by a Swedish production company interested in hiring him to develop a script for a horror film that would basically play out like a classic slasher movie.
He didn’t really have a way into that genre but going through a breakup of his own gave him inspiration to tell a story about a fractured relationship on the verge of cracking up, a grief-stricken lead character searching for family and a boyfriend who is the exact opposite of what she wants and needs.
Aster then set that dramatic story against the backdrop of a folk-horror tale that takes place in Sweden after a group of college friends accept an invite to visit a commune filled with strange, interesting characters, bizarre rituals and inevitably a horrific outcome…
