Longtime friends James Wan and Leigh Whannell shot to stardom after their first film “Saw” became a breakout hit with the movie earning over $100 million at the box office, which was more than 10 times the initial budget for the film.
That led to numerous opportunities for the duo but unfortunately they didn’t find as much success with their next project “Dead Silence” and Wan’s follow up as a director with “Death Sentence” struggled as well.
Just as Wan was ready to take a break from filmmaking, he got a call that a new production company was starting from the team behind the smash hit “Paranormal Activity” and they asked if Wan and Whannell might want to team up again for another genre movie.
Whannell remembered an idea he had years earlier that could develop into a new film so he started hammering away on a script. About halfway through, Whannell noticed there wasn’t much blood or gore in his script, which gave him the idea to pitch the movie as a PG-13 film rather than going for an ‘R’ rating.
On the surface, the film appeared to be just another haunted house story until a major twist turns the movie on its head.
The story centers around a family tormented by ghosts when their son slips into a mysterious coma but even after leaving their home behind, the spirits soon come calling again…
