In 1971, William Peter Blatty released a book based loosely upon a supposed real life exorcism that took place years earlier but the novel struggled to find success until he appeared on a talk show to debate whether or not the Devil actually existed.
Sales of the book immediately skyrocketed and Blatty began adapting his work into a screenplay after previously collaborating on numerous films with director Blake Edwards. Blatty insisted that he remain a producer on a film adaptation, especially after his script so closely followed the story from his book.
That paid off when he played a role in hiring William Friedkin as director following his success with “The French Connection.” Casting for the film wasn’t easy either with several roles changing just as production was about to begin but the choices made by Blatty, Friedkin and the studio paid off when the film was released and became a smash hit that ultimately earned 10 Academy Award nominations.
The movie centers around a single mother who desperately searches for help when her only daughter begins exhibiting bizarre behavior as if she’s been possessed…
