Emerald Fennell, who is up for an Oscar for her film “Promising Young Woman,” has now signed onto write the “Zatanna” movie for DC and Warner Bros…
Emerald Fennell — who is currently nominated for several Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for her film “Promising Young Woman” — has signed onto write a “Zatanna” movie for DC and Warner Bros.
Zatanna is a well known character from DC comics with a history as both a stage magician and a master of illusions as she bends reality to her will.
There has been a lot of buzz over the past few years about Zatanna either becoming a full length feature film or possibly a TV series as Warner Bros. and DC continue to invest more time into plans for a “Justice League Dark” adaptation. Zatanna has been a member of the team that deals with the supernatural, which also includes John Constantine, Deadman and Shade the Changing Man.
Hiring Fennell speaks to the commitment to this particular project considering the attention she’s been receiving for “Promising Young Woman,” which also includes a Best Original Screenplay award that she just recently received from the Writer’s Guild Awards.

J.J. Abrams Bad Robot studio is producing the “Zatanna” feature film for Warner Bros.
Abrams has long sought to develop the “Justice League Dark” film adaptation and his studio is also involved in the upcoming “Constantine” series at HBO Max.
It’s unclear at this time if Fennell will just pen the screenplay or if there’s a possibility that she may step into a directorial role for the “Zatanna” film as well. Considering she’s the first woman in history to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars in her directorial debut, Fennell certainly has the credentials to pull off the job.
For now, she will be writing the script that will eventually go into development at Warner Bros. for the “Zatanna” movie.
