The ‘Star Trek’ universe may boldly go where it’s never gone before…motherf–ker.

Famed writer and director Quentin Tarantino has reportedly pitched an idea for his take on a ‘Star Trek’ film with J.J. Abrams already enjoying the idea so much that he plans to assemble a writer’s room to see what can be built around this story.

According to Deadline, if Tarantino’s idea takes off, he may direct the film with Abrams on board as a producer.

Of course, Abrams helped to relaunch the ‘Star Trek’ film universe with a pair of movies he directed before he stepped away from the universe to helm ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

Tarantino has rarely lent his genius to any projects that weren’t of his own creation but back in 2015 during a podcast interview, he described how he’s had an idea for a ‘Star Trek’ movie previously and that’s something he’d like to explore.

“Where I actually think it could be cool — ’cause some of those [Star Trek] episodes are fantastic, and the only thing that limited them was their 60’s budget and eight days shooting schedule, and even having said that they did a magnificent job — but you could take some of the great, classic Star Trek episodes and just easily expand them to 90 minutes or more and really do some really amazing, amazing stuff,” Tarantino described.
“The obvious one would be “The City on the Edge of Forever”,” Tarantino said about an episode during the first season of the original ‘Star Trek’ series. “That’s what everyone would go to, but there’s a reason why everyone would go to that! It’s one of the classic stories of all time. And one of the great time travel stories.”

“The City on the Edge of Forever” is a time travel tale where three members of the crew — Captain Kirk, Spock and McCoy — are transported back in time after history has been altered and they are forced to go back to try and repair the damage.

Tarantino also mentioned another time travel favorite episode from ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ so it’s certainly something that’s piqued his interest for quite a while.

Obviously this is still at a very early stage but Tarantino seems interested enough to explore the idea of developing a ‘Star Trek’ movie based on his own story. Needless to say that’s a ‘Star Trek’ movie everyone would want to see.
