Quentin Tarantino may be returning to television.
The multi-time Oscar winner is reportedly in talks to direct one or two episodes of the upcoming “Justified: City Primeval” series, which is a revival of “Justified” which ran on FX for six seasons ending in 2015.
According to Deadline, Tarantino could potentially reunite with Timothy Olyphant, who he previously directed in his film “Once Upon a Time … In Hollywood.” Olyphant is the star of “Justified: City Primeval” as he reprises his Emmy nominated role as Marshal Raylan Givens.
Beyond his previous work with Olyphant in the past, Tarantino is an avid admirer of author Elmore Leonard, who was behind the book “Rum Punch” that was eventually adapted into the film “Jackie Brown.” That remains the only film that Tarantino has ever adapted from someone else’s work other than his own.
Of course, Leonard was the creator behind Marshal Raylan Givens, who previously appeared in his work, before that was adapted into “Justified.” Many of Leonard’s stories were also adapted into plots on “Justified” over the course of six seasons.
The upcoming “Justified: City Primeval” will also adapt another of Leonard’s stories featuring Marshal Raylan Givens, which could explain Tarantino’s interest in the project along with the chance to work with Olyphant again.
“Justified: City Primeval” finds Marshal Givens after he left Kentucky and relocated to Miami where he’s working and serving as a part-time father to a 14-year-old daughter that he shares with his ex-wife Winona. A chance encounter on a Florida highway brings Raylan to Detroit where he gets locked in a game of cat-and-mouse with dangerous sociopath Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, who previously escaped conviction in the Motor City.
“Justified: City Primeval” was already picked up to series by FX with production on the show expected to start later this year. While it appears Tarantino is still in early talks, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s worked on television after previously directing an episode of “E.R.” as well as “CSI.”
Both times, Tarantino remarked that he loved the shows and wanted the chance to work on them. That could serve as the perfect platform for Tarantino to helm an episode or two of “Justified: City Primeval” given his relationship to Leonard’s work as well as previously casting Olyphant in one of his own films.
