The showrunner for bother ‘Riverdale’ and ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ hopes a crossover is still possible…
When ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ was first announced as an upcoming television series based on the comic book of the same name, the CW seemed like the perfect landing spot.
‘Riverdale’, which operates in the same universe as ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’, was already a breakout hit for the CW so it seemed like a natural fit but ultimately the series starring Kiernan Shipka ended up at Netflix with the 10 episode first season dropping on Friday.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is the showrunner for both series and the author behind the revamped ‘Archie’ universe in the comic books as well hopes that a crossover between his two shows is still possible.
While ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ doesn’t air on the CW, ‘Riverdale’ has been a massive streaming success for Netflix after they optioned the rights for the series after the first season.
Considering ‘Riverdale’ and ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ take place in two fictional tales that are supposed to be right next door to each other, it seems almost impossible that they wouldn’t cross paths at some point and Aguirre-Sacasa already has an idea in mind.
“I would hate if there was no way possible for there ever to be a crossover,” Aguirre-Sacasa said when speaking to EW. “I think there’d be a great episode where the Riverdale kids hear about a haunted house in Greendale and try to break in and it’s Sabrina’s house. There’s totally a universe where that happens. Or now that we’ve got Sabrina and Riverdale, maybe there’s a standalone Afterlife movie or something that we can do combining both casts.”
‘Afterlife’ is reference to a 2013 story written by Aguirre-Sacasa that re-imagines the ‘Archie’ universe in the midst of a zombie apocalypse that starts after Sabrina helps bring Jughead’s dog back to life after he died.
As far as a crossover goes, nothing has obviously been planned yet but it seems like there has to be a point in the future when the cast of ‘Riverdale’ runs into ‘The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.
