“Riverdale” will come to an end with a seventh and final season in 2023.
On Thursday, The CW announced that the popular series adapted from the classic “Archie” comics would be ending after previously renewing the series for season 7.
“I’m a big believer in giving series that have long runs an appropriate sendoff,” The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz said on Thursday. “We want to make sure it goes out the right way.”
“Riverdale” was created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who had previously written for “Archie” comics while adapting the classic characters for a more adult oriented story. Aquirre-Sacasa received rave reviews for many of his supernatural twists on the “Archie” comics as well — including his take on the “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which was also adapted into a Netflix series for four seasons.
According to Pedowitz, he spoke to Aguirre-Sacasa about “Riverdale” on Wednesday and they both agreed that it was the best course of action to end the show after seven seasons.
“Riverdale” helped launch the careers of stars KJ Apa, Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart as well as bringing Cole Sprouse back to television after he famously starred alongside his twin brother Dylan as child actors in series such as “Friends.”
What started out as a murder mystery in the first season has slowly transformed into a supernatural themed show with season 6 focusing on many of the lead characters developing “super powers” following a massive time jump that transformed the show from a high school drama to a time when Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead were in their mid-20s — much like the actors who actually portrayed them.
“Riverdale” is currently airing on Sunday nights on The CW with season 6 still happening but season 7 is expected to go into production later this year with a 2023 debut date on the network.
