“American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy has a new limited series on the way at Netflix called “The Watcher,” which is based on a real-life tale of terror about a family in New Jersey.
The series will star Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale in the lead roles about a husband and wife who purchase a home only to begin receiving disturbing letters from a stalker constantly keeping an eye on the house while calling themselves ‘The Watcher.”
The new series is based on a real life incident that took place in New Jersey after a family purchased a 1905 Dutch colonial house but then days later after moving in, they started to receive a series of bizarre, threatening letters from an unknown stalker.
One of the letters read: “657 Boulevard has been the subject of my family for decades now and as it approaches its 110th birthday, I have been put in charge of watching and waiting for its second coming. My grandfather watched the house in the 1920s and my father watched in the 1960s. It is now my time.”
The letters also reference the couple’s three children as “young blood” with the letters signed by ‘The Watcher.”
Eventually, the family in New Jersey moved out after being terrified by the letters and when the house wouldn’t sell, they actually rented it out to someone else. That’s when more letters arrived and the renters were equally terrified with the letter warning them of different types of retribution that could befall them for living there including car accidents, fire or a loved one suddenly dying.
The original family was finally able to sell the home in 2019 and despite efforts from law enforcement as well as private investigators, the identity of the Watcher was never revealed.
Now Murphy and company will tell a dramatized version of that story with the new series “The Watcher” with Watts and Cannavale attached as the husband and wife who buy this cursed house.
