‘Vida’ star Melissa Barrera is the latest addition to the upcoming “Scream” sequel from the same team that made “Ready or Not”…
Melissa Barrera — best known for her role in the Starz series “Vida” as well as the upcoming Lin Manuel Miranda musical film “In the Heights” — has been cast in a “key role” for the upcoming “Scream 5” sequel.
While her actual role is being kept under wraps for obvious reasons, Barrera is the first new major cast member to join the sequel, which already boasts returns from David Arquette and Courteney Cox, who have both previously starred in all four “Scream” movies.
Original series star Neve Campbell is also in talks for a return for “Scream 5” but her casting has not been made official just yet.
Filming on the movie is expected to kick off in Wilmington, N.C. later this year with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directing after they received rave reviews for their work on the breakout horror-comedy “Ready or Not.” James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will handle the screenplay.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett will takeover the “Scream” franchise after horror icon Wes Craven directed all four of the previous installments. Sadly, Craven died in 2015 and the new directors have promised to pay homage to his original vision for “Scream” with the upcoming sequel.
