“Scream VII” is officially in development but this time there will be a new director leading the sequel as Christopher Landon takes over the horror franchise…
Get ready to scream again.
“Scream VII” has officially been ordered at Spyglass but there will be a change in the director for the sequel with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — the team known as Radio Silence — not returning after leading both “Scream” and “Scream VI.”
This time around Christopher Landon — an experienced horror film director and writer behind films such as “Happy Death Day” and “Freaky” — will sit in the director’s chair. Landon actually got his start as a screenwriter on several high profile projects such as “Disturbia” before eventually transitioning into directing.
He’ll take over for the hugely popular duo from Radio Silence, who helped revive the “Scream” franchise that stayed dormant for years after “Scream 4” was released in 2011. The fifth installment simply titled “Scream” along with “Scream VI,” which was released back in March, earned more than $300 million at the worldwide box office.
Unfortunately, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are busy at work developing a new untitled monster movie at Universal that’s keeping them busy, which likely serves as the reason they won’t return for the latest “Scream” sequel, although they will be executive producers on the project.
There’s also no word on who will be writing the “Scream VII” script due to the ongoing writer’s strike.
James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick wrote the two most recent “Scream” movies but Landon is obviously an experienced screenwriter in his own right so it remains to be seen what direction the next film will take.
Of course the ongoing actor’s strike also prevents putting any deals in place for the cast for “Scream VII” but there’s plenty of speculation that Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera and Mason Gooding will all likely return. Perhaps the biggest question will be past franchise star Neve Campbell returning after she sat out “Scream VI” over a financial dispute with the studio.
None of those questions will be answered until the studios come to terms with both the writers and the actors to end those respective strikes.
But at least for now we know that “Scream VII” is happening!
