William Lucking — best known for his role as Piney Winston on the FX series “Sons of Anarchy” — has passed away at the age of 80.
His death was confirmed by his wife after Lucking died at his home in Las Vegas on October 18.
“Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics, and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry,” Lucking’s wife Sigrid wrote in his obituary.
Lucking was a veteran actor on both the big and small screen with dozens of prominent roles including parts in films such as ‘Erin Brockovich,” “Red Dragon” and “The Rundown.” while also appearing in television series like “The A-Team” and “Murder, She Wrote.”
In 2008, Lucking joined the cast of Kurt Sutter’s series “Sons of Anarchy,” where he played Piney Winston, who was father to Ryan Hurst’s character Opie Winston as well as one of the founding members of the outlaw motorcycle club. Piney was often butting heads with Clay Morrow (played by Ron Perlman) as they continuously battled over the direction of the club throughout various seasons.
Lucking’s run with “Sons of Anarchy” came to an end in season 4 when his character was killed off the show.
Lucking is survived by his wife and two daughters.
