The hugely popular series “Squid Game” will get a second season with the creator behind the hit show already hard at work on what comes next…
“Squid Game” has become one of the most talked about shows of 2021 not to mention a massive success for Netflix after the streaming service obtained rights to the show.
Now series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has confirmed “Squid Game” season 2 is already in the works as he’s started to put together story ideas that will obviously feature a whole new group of characters as well as at least one major cast member expected to return.
“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season,” Hwang said when speaking to the Associated Press. “So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!”
“But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently.”
When “Squid Game” came to an end, Seong Gi-hun (played by actor Lee Jung-jae), who is also known as Player No. 456, finished as the only survivor of the deadly game and he left with around $38 million in prize money.
Despite his desperate need for money, Seong was profoundly affected by his time spent playing the games, which saw 454 other players die over the course of the many days they spent together on a mystery island funded by the ultra-wealthy.
The first season closed on Seong about to board a plane to go see his daughter when he spotted someone making the same wager with a person in the airport terminal that eventually led to him joining the deadly game. Seong ultimately turned around and walked back out of the terminal, which seems to hint at his desire to bring down the Squid Games once and for all.
“I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen,” Hwang teased. “So I will promise you this, Gi-hun will come back. He will do something for the world.”
Netflix hasn’t officially ordered more “Squid Game” publicly but it’s all but a foregone conclusion that Hwang will be afforded virtually any budget necessary to create another season of the hit show.
Leaked documents revealed that Netflix was projected to make around $891 million in value based on the viewing time for the first season of “Squid Game” with more than 3 billion minutes watched.
