Ewan McGregor might be picking up a lightsaber again to play Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new ‘Star Wars’ series on Disney+…
The Force is still strong in Ewan McGregor.
After rumors swirled for several years that McGregor would return as Obi-Wan Kenobi for a new ‘Star Wars’ movie, it appears he will instead reprise the role he played in three prequel films for a new limited event series on Disney+.
McGregor is currently in talks to return as the Jedi master for a new Disney+ series that would join two more ‘Star Wars’ shows already happening on the new streaming service. ‘The Mandalorian’ from writer/director Jon Favreau will debut in November as part of the Disney+ launch while a prequel series focused on “Rogue One” character Cassian Andor is also currently in the works.
Disney and Lucasfilm shifted directions for the ‘Star Wars’ franchise after ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ ended up receiving lukewarm reviews and a less than stellar performance at the box office.
McGregor previously played Obi-Wan Kenobi in three ‘Star Wars’ films — ‘The Phantom Menace’, ‘Attack of the Clones’ and ‘Revenge of the Sith’ — as he mentored Anakin Skywalker before he eventually made the turn to become Darth Vader.
There are very few details available about the plans for an Obi-Wan Kenobi series but considering McGregor already portrayed the character through three prequel movies, it’s entirely possible this new show could center on his journeys during the rise of the Empire when his former pupil came to power as Darth Vader under the tutelage of the evil Emperor Palpatine.
McGregor is staying very busy this days in addition to his plans to portray Obi-Wan Kenobi again, he’s also currently working on the film ‘Doctor Sleep’, which serves as a direct sequel to the classic horror film ‘The Shining’. McGregor will also star as the villainous Black Mask in the upcoming ‘Birds of Prey’ movie from DC and Warner Bros.
