A pseudo sequel to “Contagion” is currently in the works from director Steven Soderbergh after he revealed his plans for a follow up to his 2011 film…
When Steven Soderbergh’s film “Contagion” opened in 2011, the movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews and made a modest amount of money at the box office but it wasn’t a blockbuster by any means.
Nine years later, “Contagion” shot to the top of online streaming and rental services in large part due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with Soderbergh’s film striking an eerily similar tone while warning about habits such as not touching your face, washing your hands thoroughly and practicing social distancing in order to prevent the spread of a deadly disease.
While the made up virus in “Contagion” was far deadlier than COVID-19, Soderbergh’s film struck a nerve with audiences in 2020 because it was almost like the award-winning director predicted exactly what would happen if a severe pandemic ever struck on a global scale.
Thanks to the renewal of interest in “Contagion” throughout the year, Soderbergh has now revealed that he’s actually working on a pseudo sequel to the movie, although it doesn’t sound like a direct tie-in to the original film starring Matt Damon and Laurence Fishburne.
“I’ve got a project in development that Scott Burns is working with me on, that’s a kind of philosophical sequel to Contagion, but in a different context,” Soderbergh told the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
“You’ll look at the two of them as kind of paired, but they have very different hair colors. So, Scott and I were talking about, ‘So, what’s the next iteration of a Contagion-type story?’ So we have been working on that. We should probably hot-foot it a little bit.”
Burns wrote the original “Contagion” as well so obviously he’s partnered with Soderbergh in the past and it appears the two of them have something new brewing for the future.
Obviously it’s far too early to speculate when Soderbergh’s film could be released but it appears he’s ready to begin working on it as soon as possible.
