“Stranger Things” will return in May and one of the creators teases that season 4 will be the scariest one yet…
“Stranger Things” season 4 promises to be the scariest yet.
That’s according to co-creator Ross Duffer, who detailed how he and his brother Matt initially pitched the concept of the show to Netflix and then the ever evolving changes that have been made from season to season.
Duffer says that the darker tone of the series will definitely be felt when season 4 debuts on May 27 as the show starts to really lean into a more terrifying realm than anything they’ve done previously.
“When we pitched it to Netflix all those years ago, we pitched it as the kids are…The Goonies in E.T.,” Duffer explained to Netflix. “That’s their storyline. And the adults are in Jaws and Close Encounters and then the teens are in Nightmare on Elm Street or Halloween.
“But, this year, we don’t have the kids. We can’t do The Goonies anymore. And so, suddenly, we’re leaning much harder into that horror movie territory that we love. It was fun to make that change.”
Much of the cast from “Stranger Things” has grown up during the filming of the series with only actor Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, still under 18 years old among all the kids who once started the show back in 2016.
Of course it’s already been announced that “Stranger Things” season 4 will be split into two parts with the first debuting on May 27 and then the second half dropping on on July 1. From there, “Stranger Things” will start moving towards the endgame with the fifth and final season already ordered at Netflix.
“Stranger Things” season 4 will pick up six months after the events in season 3, which saw Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas and Will battle against the Mind Flayer in the middle of Starcourt Mall. When the season ended, Jim Hopper was presumed dead — although later revealed to be locked in a Russian prison camp — and Joyce Byers decided to move her family away from Hawkins, Indiana while also taking Eleven with them as she promised to care for the orphan with Hopper gone.
Duffer couldn’t reveal too much about what’s in store for season 4 but he admitted that despite very little information being available, some savvy fans have impressed him with the theories he’s seen on the internet.
“I think they’ll be happy when they see it,” Duffer said about season 4. “It’s very, very long, which is why it’s taking us a very long time. [Some of the theories are’ startlingly accurate.
“I’m constantly impressed with how sharp the fans are, and how quickly they’re able to put something together with very, very little information.”
While there’s still two months remaining until new episodes of “Stranger Things” arrives, a slew of photos were released teasing what lies ahead along with a look at some new characters as well. Take a look at those below:
