“Stranger Things” is finally set to return with season 4 splitting into two parts but the show is also coming to an end with a fifth and final season announced…
“Stranger Things” will be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
The hit series has been dormant for nearly three years due to delays in production because of the global pandemic but the long awaited fourth season will debut later this year on Netflix with the episodes split into two parts.
Following “Stranger Things” season 4, the show will return for a fifth and final season as announced by series creators Matt and Ross Duffer on Thursday.
According to the Duffer brothers, “Stranger Things” season 4 was just so supersized with the length of the episodes that the decision was made to split the show into two separate parts with the first debuting in May and then the second half dropping in July.
“With nine scripts, over 800 pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots, and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, “Stranger Things 4” was the most challenging season yet but also the most rewarding one,” the Duffer brothers wrote in a joint statement. “Everyone involved is incredibly proud of the results and we can’t wait to share it with you.
“Given the unprecedented length, and to get it to you as soon possible, season 4 will be released in two volumes. Volume One will release on May 27; Volume Two will release five weeks later on July 1. So that’s the good news. It’s coming soon and it’s bigger than ever. It’s also the beginning of the end.”
Following season 4, the Duffer brothers will then move forward with “Stranger Things” season 5, which will bring the story to a close just as they always intended.
“Seven years ago, we planned out the complete story arc for ‘Stranger Things,'” the Duffer brothers explaind. “At the time, we predicted that the story would last four to five seasons. It proved too large to tell in four but — as you’ll soon see for yourselves — we are now hurtling toward our finale. Season 4 will be the penultimate season; season 5 will be the last.
“There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of ‘Stranger Things’; new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes. But first we hope that you stay with us as we finish this tale of a power girl named Eleven and her brave friends, of a broken police chief and a ferocious mom, of a small town called Hawkins and an alternate dimension known only as the Upside Down. As always, we are grateful for your patience and support.”

The Duffer brothers have long talked about an endgame for “Stranger Things” with a complete story in mind when they first started working on the series. Of course, they couldn’t have predicted at the time that the show would become a pop culture phenomenon while launching the careers of the young actors involved with the series including Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard as well as making David Harbour a household name while simultaneously giving Winona Ryder a successful second act.
Before they can get to work on season 5, “Stranger Things” season 4 has to drop first later this year with a synopsis for the nine episodes also revealed on Thursday:
“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”
When “Stranger Things” season 4 ended, Joyce Byers decided to move her family out of Hawkins and relocation to a bigger city in Indianapolis and she ultimately took Eleven with her after it appeared that Chief Jim Hopper (Harbour) had died while trying to stop a rift in the Upside Down from being ripped open. Hopper didn’t really die because he’s been kidnapped and placed into a Russian prison camp, which is where he will found when season 4 begins.
With all this information now being made public, it seems like only a matter of time before a first full-length trailer for “Stranger Things” season 4 to arrive with details on production for the fifth and final season still to be determined.
Judging by the statement from the Duffer brothers, it would also appear that a “Stranger Things” spinoff could be possible for the future as well.
