A pair of high profile Marvel Studios projects add some star power with “Succession” favorite Matthew Macfayden joining “Deadpool 3” while Liv Tyler returns for “Captain America: New World Order”…
Marvel Studios has beefed up a pair of high profile sequels with a star from one of TV’s hottest series as well as an actor returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time in 15 years.
First up, Matthew Macfayden — best known for his Emmy winning role as Tom Wambsgans on the HBO hit series “Succession” — has joined the cast of “Deadpool 3” in a secret role.
Macfayden will join a cast that also includes Ryan Reynolds returning as the Merc with a Mouth while Hugh Jackman is back as Wolverine. “The Crown” star Emma Corrin is also part of the cast with expectations that they will play a villain in the upcoming sequel.
Right now, Macfayden is starring in the fourth and final season of “Succession,” which remains one of the top series on HBO with the series likely heading towards another slew of awards over the next year. Macfayden has been praised for his performance as Tom where he’s been a series regular since the pilot.
There’s no word on what kind of role Macfayden will play, although there had been rumors that Marvel was seeking a third component to play opposite Reynolds and Jackman in their lead roles but it’s unknown if he’ll ultimately play a hero or a villain in Marvel Studios first ever ‘R’ rated feature.
Meanwhile, the upcoming sequel “Captain America: New World Order,” which will feature Anthony Mackie taking over the lead role from Chris Evans, has also added an unexpected name to the cast.
Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty Ross — a part she last played back in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” opposite Edward Norton. Norton’s role was eventually recast with Mark Ruffalo famously taking over as Bruce Banner/The Hulk with appearances across several Marvel films including “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
As Betty Ross, Tyler portrayed the daughter of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross — a high ranking character who appeared in several Marvel films including “Avengers: Infinity War” with the role originally being played by the late, great William Hurt.
Harrison Ford will now take over that role as General Ross except he’ll be President Thaddeus Ross in the upcoming “Captain America” sequel, which will see Mackie take over as the Star-Spangled hero following the events of the Disney+ series “Falcon and The Winter Soldier.”
Look for these films coming soon with “Captain America: New World Order” due out on May 3, 2024 while “Deadpool 3” is currently slated to land in theaters on November 8, 2024.
