A favorite couple on ‘Supergirl’ appears doomed as season 3 gets underway next Monday night…
The end of ‘Supergirl’ season 2 left a couple of cliffhangers, but perhaps none more emotional that Alex Danvers proposing marriage to her girlfriend and National City cop Maggie Sawyer.
While the world will have to wait until next Monday when ‘Supergirl’ season 3 premieres to find out what she said, it appears sadly that the end of the couple is already written on the wall.
Floriana Lima, who plays Maggie Sawyer on the show, apparently requested to drop out of her full time status on the series and will only be recurring in season 3, which left producers with few options considering her major role alongside Alex on the show.
According to ‘Supergirl’ executive producer Andrew Kreisberg, it was a heartbreaking decision to put an end to ‘Sanvers’ as fans had dubbed the couple but he promises some very emotional storytelling coming up in the first part of the season that will give a proper storyline for Maggie’s exit.
“Well, unfortunately, Floriana decided to move on, which left us with, how do we write her out as a regular while still honoring these two women who were deeply in love with each other?” Kreisberg said when speaking to EW. “Taking a page out of some of our own personal dating history, we’ve come up with a story that we really feel like honors what’s come before them, and honors how much they love each other, and how much they mean to each other, and how much they’ve changed each other’s lives. It’s some of the most emotional stuff we’ve ever done, and Floriana has been so good in these first five episodes.
“Episode 3 is all about Maggie and her dad, played by Carlos Bernard, and it’s some of the most heartbreaking stuff I’ve ever done on anything I’ve ever done. Maggie does not die. I’m sure a lot of people are afraid of that. Maggie will continue to exist in the world and if the opportunity presents itself for her, she’ll come back.”
Lima’s status had already been changed from series regular to recurring but it appears based on Kreisberg’s statement that she will completely leave the show after the first few episodes of the season. Of course he added that they would welcome Lima back should the opportunity arise.
As of now, Lima hasn’t booked any other gigs although she has also been a recurring character on the FOX series ‘Lethal Weapon’ as well.
