The final DC series still alive at The CW is coming to an end with “Superman & Lois” returning for a shortened fourth and final season…
There was a time not that long ago when The CW was almost a network that exclusive ran DC Comics based series following the success of “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Supergirl” and “Legends of Tomorrow.”
That era has officially come to an end, especially with the news that “Superman & Lois” — the final remaining DC series still airing on The CW — will be coming to a close with the upcoming fourth season.
The series that stars Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch was renewed for a shortened 10 episode season at a tumultuous time for the network as ownership at The CW changed hands and the new bosses have been looking to dramatically cut costs and shift focus from ultra-expensive series like those set in the DC universe as produced by Warner Bros.
Now “Superman & Lois” is slated to return for 10 final episodes in 2024 and that will bring the series to a close.
“While we’re sad to say goodbye to Superman & Lois at the end of season 4, we’re grateful for the time we’ve had with our amazing cast, crew, vfx teams, editors, musical geniuses, and writers,” showrunners Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher said in a statement.
“Since the day this show was first discussed, it was about family. And that’s what was created — on and off screen. We’d like to thank our partners at Berlanti Productions, DC, WB and The CW for their endless support and enthusiasm during this journey … and give a very special thank you to all the fans for tuning in.”
On top of “Superman & Lois” coming to an end, the budget for the final season was slashed with only a few cast members returning as series regulars with many others being relegated to guest starring roles if they return at all. All those details remain to be seen once the show gets back into production.
“Superman & Lois” season 3 finally introduced Superman’s greatest nemesis Lex Luthor — as played by “Walking Dead” alum Michael Cudlitz — and he’ll remain the main antagonist leading into this last season.
